Flyers make a presence at MTB XC OCUP 1 at Mansfield

Sunday, sunny and cool. Great conditions for a deep woods mountain bike race. The course at Mansfield was fast and sandy, coulds of billowing dust that creeped into your lungs as you huffed, only to have you hacking at the end while trying to share your ride with team mates. Right off the bat, a 500 meter climb spread out the pack for the single track at the top. A mid lap decent created a few white knuckles as you hoped to slow down enough on the sandy washboard to thread the needle between two mean maples at the bottom. A few technical ridge climbs and alot of twisty singletrack made for a fun season opener that reminded all how valuable momentum really is.

Parry Bell, racing in the Masrter Sport 30-39 men, spent 1hr47min20sec to cover the 28km course an average speed of 15.5km/hr, finishing in 32.

Edgars Apse, in the Master Expert 30-39, at an average speed of 19.9km/hr, took 1hr54min2sec to tear through the 38km course finishing just in the points in 21st place (just 10 minutes off the pace). This is his first time posting points on a season opener.

The XC Flyers will spend the next few days clearing their lungs in prep for OCUP 2 at Albion Hills on May 11th. Go Get Em Boys!!

Flyers do well at the Zigzag

A sunny but cool day by the lake, three Flyers and Jordan from the Gears Cadet team put in a great showing at this crazy little crit. There was always a Flyer in the lead pack and often off the front.

A crash in the second lap kept everyone on their toes, with tight corners threatening to spit out the over enthusiastic and anyone who got stuck on the outside. Total distance for the race was 27.2km, with an average speed of 34.5km/h. Maximum speed a brisk: 53.1 km/h on the flats.

Final results: 2nd place for Quentin and 6th for Paul. Jordan came in first in his division. Mark finished 21st in his division. Thanks to Allan for the pictures.

Paris-Ancaster

This years P2A was again on a sunny and warm and dry day. Great conditions for a race that has you hauling yourself across highways, gravel rail trails, farmers access roads, ditch crossings, and ATV trenched trails and cornfields. There was a significant headwind this year that made the need to be in a paceline as you hit the open trails ever so important.

All the off road sections were fairly dry but soft making it tough to push the cross tires across with any great momentum. Three key sections were, as expected deep with mud, enough to cover the frames and jerseys of all riders.

Early into the race, there was a huge pileup as a crash on the railtrail that sent waterbottles and bikes sliding and skidding. Both DH racers (Edgars and Gord) were lucky to avoid any of the
multiple crashes that occured through the day.

The top finisher rolled in after 1hr, 53 minutes 50 sec, ahead of the other 1017 other male 60 km starters. Not quite 7 minutes behind at 2 hrs and 39 secs was Edgars Apse in 27th place, bettering his previous year finish of 52nd. Gord Lemon, who started well behind 350 riders, fought his way to finish in 111th place at 2:13:05. Of the 288 competitors in their age category they represented 15th and 42nd respectively.

Not so bad for the Flyers early in the season.

Slowtwitch UCI Legal Time Trial Position

After a day of theory and an hour of work, I was fit to the "fit cycle" in a UCI legal position at the following coordinates:
80 degrees of seat angle, 81 cm of saddle height, 23 cm of drop from the saddle nose to the aero bar pads and a cock pit of 87cm. Saddle used was the Adamo road saddle, a unique no-nose saddle that you set on with your "junk" hanging off the front. This position would not be UCI legal without that saddle as the nose of the saddle has to be 5cm behind the bottom bracket.
No problem producing power either. 230, 300, 400 watts.
